This qualification reflects the role of workers who provide services to clients in relation to mental health issues. They can provide counselling, referral, advocacy and education/health promotion services. These workers are required to have high level specialist knowledge, skills and competencies especially in regard to laws affecting people with mental health issues, the range of services available to them and health issues related to mental health.
To achieve this qualification, the student must have completed at least 160 hours of work as detailed in the Assessment Requirements of units of competency.

Employer-based training offers a flexible, self-paced study program which combines workplace recognition of prior learning and individualised ‘gap’ training to attain your qualification.
This means every time you go to work you are learning and demonstrating competence whilst working towards your qualification. The flexibility of Employer-based training allows you to structure and perform learning and assessment in a way that fits into your professional and personal life.
Learning and assessment plans are created on an individual level in consultation with you and/or your employer. Assessment is conducted using numerous methods including practical demonstration and observation, question and answer interviews, written tasks, supervisor reports and workshops.

It also explores counselling and how to manage stressors in the workplace.
Learning is self-paced over a 12-month period – with a requirement to complete 160 hours of work placement experience within the mental health field. In addition to receiving the face-to-face classroom training, you will also have access to all your learning resources online enabling you to review all the classroom content in your own time. Blended learning to suit your lifestyle allows for greater flexibility.
