Building and construction covers a wide range of jobs in areas such as planning, engineering, architecture and trades such as painting, carpentry, plumbing, tiling, roofing and electrical – for both commercial and residential projects. Residential building includes the construction of houses, flats, units and townhouses. Commercial (non-residential) building includes schools, hospitals, shops, offices and factories.
A large part of the industry involves planning, which involves all of the work that goes into building and maintaining infrastructure such as our roads and streets, railways, power supplies, dams and sewerage systems. Everywhere you go, this industry has made a contribution.
There's also the design and engineering side of building and construction which offers jobs in areas such as architecture and building design, where you can specialise in areas such as environmentally friendly and sustainable housing design.
