This course, available as an apprenticeship, will give you all the skills and knowledge to become a trades qualified carpenter working in new construction; maintenance, repair and renovations; or other settings such as custom cabinetry or timberwork.
Carpenters are key players in the construction game — they're often the first onsite and the last to leave. In addition to his or her own skills, a good carpenter must also have knowledge of all other trades as their work often sets things up for the other trades who follow them.
In this course, you'll learn how to read and interpret building plans and specifications; measure and calculate materials; use basic carpentry tools, power tools and materials; construct a pitched roof, ceiling frames and wooden flooring; and apply work health and safety requirements.

Apprentices will learn through a combination of on-the-job training and block training at North Regional TAFE.
Throughout this course, participants will acquire skills that enable them to carry out a range of tasks required in the building and construction industry.
First Year
Apprentices gain essential practical skills, safety standards and fundamental knowledge to perform as a carpenter.
Second Year
Apprentices work on a transportable building project, covering 12 units and full construction of the project from start to finish throughout the year. As an alternate to this project, a construction of a single dwelling will be constructed comprising stumps, bearers and joists and relative wall and roof framing; this dwelling will be cladded and lined to support required modules allowing also for the associated modules for the second year.
Third Year
Apprentices learn the formwork aspect of the trade. They also complete the required Certificate III level units, using fundamental knowledge and skills gained in first and second years.

This is a trade qualification for carpenters in residential and commercial workplaces. It includes setting out, manufacturing, constructing, assembling, installing and repairing products made using timber and steel products.

The CPC30220 Certificate III in Carpentry is a trade level qualification and provides students with necessary skills and knowledge to work on a building site in the area of construction carpentry.
Students will learn how to efficiently produce quality work in the building and construction, renovation and maintenance sectors of the industry. Major areas of study include interpretation of plans, measurements and calculations, use of power tools and equipment, installing flooring and constructing timber external stairs etc.
The course is primarily aimed at the residential sector of the industry where students will be able to construct domestic framework, formwork, scaffolding and footings. You will also gain the knowledge to be able to interpret plans and apply work health and safety to ensure you meet industry safety standard requirements at all times.

The Certificate III in Carpentry is a trade level qualification and provides students with the necessary skills and knowledge to work on a building site in the construction industry. This is a trade qualification for carpenters in residential and commercial workplaces. You will learn the following skills: setting out, manufacturing, constructing, assembling, installing and repairing products made using timber and non-timber materials. The apprenticeship program consists of twelve one-week blocks over a four year period and on the job training.
