There are lots of opportunities in the agricultural industry all around WA, and this skill set will give you the entry level skills and knowledge that employers are looking for.

You will learn how to to work safely in an agricultural environment, including the safe use of chemicals, and gain practical skills relating to the operation and maintenance of agricultural tools and machinery including tractors and other vehicles used in farming. This skill set is ideal for anyone with no previous experience in agriculture or farming. It has been designed particularly for people recently migrated to Western Australia who would like to work in agriculture or farming.

What is a skill set?

In vocational education and training (VET), a skill set is a short course that's developed by choosing individual units of competency from a full qualification (or qualifications) that target a specific set of skills and knowledge, to meet the needs of industry or a particular job role. 

The units of competency in a skill set are nationally accredited and recognised. 

This means that when you successfully complete a skill set, you will receive a Statement of Attainment as an official record. This verifies that you have completed those units, so that you can receive credit for them should you continue on to further study.


Skill sets are also used to upskill workers for specific skills and knowledge required for their job; or in situations where a full qualification is not required.

The local skill set Entry into working in Agriculture has been developed to assist and address labour shortages in the agriculture sector. The training will be targeted to new local entrants to provide strength in the local workforce.

Students who complete the skill set can expect to find employment in entry level positions as a labourer. The farm labourer role may be in small to medium business or in large corporate agricultural operations. On successful completion of this course, students will receive a statement of attainment for the following nationally accredited units:

  • AWCWH201  Participate in work health and safety;
  • AHCCHM201 Apply chemicals under supervision;
  • ACHMOM202 Operate tractors;
  • AHCMOM204 Undertake operational maintenance of machinery; and
  • AHCCHM101 Follow basic chemical safety rules.
